Rock and a hard place.

If he chose people from outside the Beltway, the knock would have been that
"his choice of inexperienced people shows poor judgment". By picking
experienced people, the knock becomes that he isn't making good on the
promise of "change".

I'll give him points for reaching out to McCain for help... and appointing
people he was running against. ... but then, we'll just have to wait to see
what form "change" takes.

I see it the same way. But in any case, it's going to be very
entertaining to see him and Hillary duke it out. If he's able to
control her, I'll be very impressed.

It kind of reminds me of when GW appointed Colin Powell & Condi Rice.
If he hadn't appointed any blacks to his cabinet, then he's a racist.
Since he did, they're Uncle Toms. I remember Harry Belafonte had some
rather unkind things to say about Powell & Rice a few years ago,
pretty much saying that they were tokens. But, then again, he's a
Castro/Chavez-loving celebrity, so I don't really put much stock in
his opinion.

That's putting it strongly. I think it's a good choice, but that it
might lead to trouble because of Mrs. Clinton obvious strong ego and
the shadow of her husband. If they can combine their stregths, it's a
great choice. If there's trouble, there might be lots of it. Firing
her at some point seems a pretty problematic option.

Then again, my knowledge of American politics stems mostly from "The
West Wing".

Not only that, but she probably still feels that she's entitled to the
presidency & assumed for years that it would be hers in 2008.

Thank goodness he's picking actual adults with proven track records of
success instead of a rogues gallery filled with inept clods. If he had
picked Arabian horse dealers, Goldman Sachs CEO's, lapdog personal
attorneys, and ancient crusty curmudgeons to run everything that wouldn't
have been any change at all.

Change doesn't mean something *entirely* new; there's no such thing in
Washington and there never will be. What we *are* seeing is a total 180
degree change from the pathetically inept gyrations of the buffoonish,
amateur laden Bush administration to a government run by people with brains,
who are actually qualified for their positions, and who are willing to work
with each other to come up with comprehensive plans to deal with today's
crisis situation, instead of picking a bunch of clowns who end up free
lancing at cross purposes with no supervision.

That's a ginormous change from the last 8 years; not to mention the
intelligent, curious, informed, and hard working man in the Oval Office.
What a tremendous contrast. Thank god.

Very smart choice politically, especially when it comes to placating
the hawks on the Middle East . It also unifies the Dem party and
assures him the support of the women who supported Hillary in the
primaries.

His pick for Treasury Secretary seemed to go down well with the
market this afternoon too. That Obama is one sharp cat :-)

Everybody at this level has an obvious strong ego. Why single out
Hillary?

> If there's trouble, there might be lots of it.'

Other than her last name being "Clinton" (which seems to drive some
people bonkers) what makes you exect trouble? Why single out Hillary
for the possibility of trouble?

Sheesh, she hasn't even been announced and you are already talking
about the problems with her being fired? Why single out Hillary for
this sort of speculation?

Not trying to pick on you Thomas, but this insane "worry about
Hillary" meme in drving me bonkers.

I think there will be more of a potential for conflict between Biden and
Clinton. IMO Joe wanted to be the main foreign relations man.

I'd think that was obvious: she was his main opponent for the
nomination? *I* 'd certainly be a bit bitter.

I'd probably single out anyone who was Obama's last serious rival for
the nomination.

Remember, I'm from SLOE: the people over here actually thought Clinton
was a great president. In my country, a woman holds the most important
political post and I vote for her.

I think the right guy won - the nomination and the election. But
you've had a lot worse choices than these three in the past.
