Almost $100 bucks to the airport Can't Post

I may get banned from avlv for this....... didn't know exactly what time
we were leaving Harrahs, so didn't book one of their limos. When we went
out to the cab line it was loooong. I told the bellman if he had a limo
hanging around I would be interested. He got on his cell phone and one
came flying around the corner in about 90 seconds. He did ask me if I
wanted him to load up the car with other airport people, and I said no.
So 20 for the bellman and 70 for the limo, easy when leaving with a
pocket full of their money. Tom in Ct

Was it at least one of those limos with free booze?

You might want to check Chapter 42 of "The Vegas Code" for some

I think that Tom's just enjoying a little luxury he could afford. Good

Ugh! As a Vegas cab driver I bust my hump to make little more in a twelve
hours shift than that one ten minute ride cost ya.

Tom, you and the other AVLV'ers simply must start throwing us low-life
(honest) cab drivers an occasional bit of your winnings!

BTW - My phone number - as well as my services - are readily available to

That's how I feel! My gamblin' is DONE once I get in that cab to the
airport. At the airport, I'm too busy get' blitzoed at the Gordon
Biersch bar . However, I'm always reading about how some lucky slob
wins million$ on those WoFortune machines there while waitin' for
there plane. I believe Jackie Gaughn owns the license for those
machines though they don't accept any slot cards...

I'm not sure what "American Style" tipping is but I'm glad to see you
consider yourself an honest cab driver. Every cab I've taken in Las
Vegas has resulted in attempts at long hauling and other scams to run
up the meter. You must be the only honest cabby there.

Tom in Ct told me a long time ago that the first thing he does every
morning is change $100 bill into $5's and everytime he is served a drink
he tips $5. I sort of doubted it until last June when I saw him in action,
and it is true. Tom's a generous rich man-----must have been for Obama.

I was once heading from the Gold Coast to the airport where the taxi
line was really long. Next to the long cab line was a perfectly good
stretch lemo. I gathered a group of guys (from New Jersey) together and
we took the lemo to the airport and split the fare. I think the total
cost was around $100, but we split it about six ways so it was very
reasonable.

The way it was explained to me--by law, lemo drivers cannot solicit
fares in Las Vegas, but you can approach them and negotiate a deal.

I must reply with the same three letter word I used earlier: UGH! $100 for
a 15 minute ride?

Further, flip, I had to laugh when I read 'there was a really long line at
the Gold Coast'. I dare say the Gold Coast has never, ever, EVER had a
"really long" cab line!

As soon as I wrote "American Style" I knew I should have worded it better.
It was a late hour (as it is now as I write this). Twelve hour shifts AND
trying to keep up with the AVLV board is tiring!

While we in Vegas cannot be completely unhappy by the fact that a rather
large part of our economy has been - especially in recent months - supported
by foreigners, those of us who work for tips have seen a decline in our
income. "American Style" tipping is far different from "European or Mexican
or Australian or [fill in the country] Style".

Don't get me wrong. As the economy continues to tank (and I don't have
great faith in the President-elect to pay my bills) I am thankful to have a
job and for every fifty cent tip I get.

In the past I've raised the taxi cab issue here a few times. And I've oft
considered doing so more often. But I've concluded that, with few
exceptions, everyone reading this NG is a regular member of the choir. Very
few visitors ever join in. And members of this choir don't need preaching
to!

Just remember.... If you get into a taxi at the airport (and your
destination is not South Point, Green Valley Ranch or anyplace south) all
you need tell the cab driver is "please do NOT take the tunnel".

Since it is a well-known fact, no liable: the worst "longhaulers" (I call
them THIEVES) are drivers for Nellis and Desert cab companies. But it's not
all their fault. Those two companies, especially, pressure them severely to
"bring home the bacon".

This is from yesterday's Las Vegas Sun newspaper:

By Jeff German Thu, Nov 20, 2008

"A former Nellis Cab Co. driver has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit
that is sure to attract the attention of industry leaders and regulators.

Adrian Niculescu, who spent four years at Nellis Cab, alleges that he was
fired July 14 in part because he refused to follow an unofficial company
practice of long-hauling passengers to McCarran International Airport.

Long-hauling, which is against state law, enables drivers, and in turn their
companies, to earn more money by running up the meter on unsuspecting
passengers. Cabbies picking up tourists on the Strip will sometimes take the
long route by traveling on I-15 South to the airport tunnel off I-215,
rather than the direct route through street traffic."

As an HONEST cab driver I can only hope it 'attracts attention'. But, trust
me, it won't. 100 to 1 odds.

Sorry to be so lengthy but after working as a casino dealer and shift
supervisor for over twenty years I am now "just" a cab driver. The ever
increasing majority in my profession are giving me a bad name. I don't like
it. And I'm fighting back ... even if I'm fighting only to the choir.

Mexican tipping? Isn't that also know as extortion? I had to take a
cab in Mexico City. As soon as I got in the driver told me to give
him $5, pointing to a police car across the street and said, "That's
my brother."

Good for you.

The last time I mentioned my experiences with Las Vegas taxis,
describing the most egregious ones, a cab driver's brilliant response
was, "You'd better make sure you never get in my cab." I guess this
guy wasn't too bright because I made it clear that there are no cabs
in my future in Vegas.

The Las Vegas bad cab experiences go back at least 30 years. One of
the worst was taking a cab from N Las Vegas airport to Fremont Street,
a cab ride I'd taken once a month for about 4 years, occasionally
with an honest driver. We finally arrived on Fremont Street, after
going by the Tropicana twice. I knew exactly what the fare should
have been but he wanted to charge me what the meter said, about 5
times that.

I told him to call the police because I wasn't paying what he wanted.
The police showed up and gave him a choice of accepting what I offered
or having some severe legal problems. After I paid him he said, "Hey,
you forgot my tip." This experience was fairly typical although most
of the time it was just enough of a long haul so tourists wouldn't get
suspicious.

After that experience I always told the driver which route to take,
street by street. Most were very unhappy and complained, as if they
had a right to cheat people.

It's doubtful I'd ever take another cab in Las Vegas or a few other
select cities . When I was still drinking, I stopped using cabs and
instead used car services with set rates per hour. Now, using my own
car or a rental car is a much better deal for me since I no longer
drink.

Las Vegas isn't the only place with dishonest cab drivers. I worked
undercover during a robbery investigation as cab driver in the Los
Angeles area. When I first started I was intensely schooled by the
dispatchers and other drivers about all the scams I could get away
with to cheat the fares out of more and more money and what to do if a
fare challenged the meter. After 3 months I came to the conclusion
that Gypsy grifters, assorted con artists and politicians were more
honest than the cab drivers I worked around.

Hmmm. Walt, what do you think? Volume 7?

Was his body ever found?
