Any one see end of Steelers game? Can't Post

Steelers favored by 4 1/2 over San Diego. Losing 10-8 with under a
minute left. Steelers get in position for field goal which would mean
they win 11-10 but dont cover spread. Willie Parker busts one around
end and scores TD which after extra point would mean Steelers go up
15-10 and cover. Refs call holding and take TD away. Steelers kick
field goal to go up 11-10 and once again not cover.

San Diego recieves kickoff and has time for one more play. San Diego
throws short pass to L.T. who laterals it to Chambers. Polamalu knocks
ball away and picks it up and runs for TD which means Steelers up 17-10
and now cover spread again. The refs review the lateral and no replays
show it was forward. Steelers start to line up for extra point and refs
announce it was an illegal forward pass and TD doesnt count and game
over and steelers win 11-10 and once again do not cover.

After the game, referee Scott Green said the officials realized
afterward the touchdown should have counted, though it wouldn't have
affected the result.

Not only are gamblers either really pissed or really happy but one of
the playoff tiebreakers is total points or margin or victory so the
Steelers are pissed too

I bet the Chargers so I was real happy but truth be told, it was a criminal
call. I have never seen anything like it. There was no forward pass at
all.

I am surprised this is not a bigger controversy.

I thought I saw Cris Collinsworth saying that it is the seventh tie-breaker
and won't come into play this year. I had only one play yesterday and it
was nice sized three team parlay with the Chargers in it. I was happy with
the result but think it was pretty messed up. Some people felt Vegas was
involved to cash in on the Chargers because they felt the were going to be
hit very hard by Dallas in the late game. I'd hate to think they have that
power and just want to chalk it up to another officiating mistake.

I certainly liked it, but they got it wrong and this is much bigger than
Tim Donaghy due to the amount of money involved.

The reversal was to my eyes correct, although one could argue whether it
was "indisputable." But that only means there was a penalty; Pit should
still have had the option to take the play or the penalty, and as you note
due to tiebreaker implications they clearly decline the penalty.

They called it as if it was a dead ball situation, which it clearly was not.

Oh it's huge, you just may not have noticed it.

I just discovered the play is _dead_ following an illegal forward pass
if the ball hits the ground (which as the officials now admit, did not
happen untl the next lateral).

So contrary to what you thought (and I thought) Pit did not have the
option to "take the play".

I was a basket case as someone who had the Chargers plus 4. I am
screaming at my TV as Pit scores (prior to kicking the field goal).
Then I cool off a bit as the play is called back due to a penalty. I
was so relieved when Pit kicks the field goal to make it 11-10. I
CAN'T LOSE, RIGHT?

What a shocker when Pit scores on the final play. I completely lost it
yelling about my worst "bad beat" ever as I stomped through my house
cursing, throwing my newspaper against the wall and generally making a
complete fool of myself. My mother would be so proud.

So you can imagine my glee when the refs blew it and I won my bet.
What a gift.

Michael

They did in this case, since as you said the ball did not hit the ground.
Had the ball hit the ground Pit would not have had the option to take the
play as it unfolded past the IFP, their option would have been to take the
dead ball spot or penalty.

The NFL admitted as much, and within about an hour of the game ending too -
guess they were feeling some heat.

Now, whether they will have the courage to officially address the matter
this week...good luck with all that.
